Barbara Headley Obituary

Barbara Lou (Hawkins) Headley, 85, of Tipton, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2025 with her loving family by her side. She was born on January 4, 1940 in Sims, Indiana to her parents, Arthur Hawkins and Paula (Allison) Hawkins. Barbara married the love of her life, Jimmie Headley, on September 17, 1960, and the two were very thankful to have nearly 65 years together.

Barbara graduated from Fort Myers High School in the class of 1958. She went on to earn her LPN at the Indianapolis School of Nursing. Barbara worked as a nurse for several years, and then decided she wanted to pursue childcare. Barbara loved children, and was incredibly patient. She truly had all the qualities needed to not just provide quality care but Barbara was also able to encourage and nurture each child to learn, grow, explore and be creative. Childcare was her passion, and it was a joy to watch Barbara in her element.

After dedicating many years to in-home childcare, Barbara decided to pursue another passion; cooking. She worked for Lincoln Elementary School as head cook. She enjoyed the work very much and went on to open up The Soda Shop and Headley’s Cafeteria in Tipton. Barbara loved serving and enjoyed running a business. These special places are still fondly remembered by many. After a good run, Jimmie and Barbara decided to close the restaurants. Barbara finished out her working years doing what she loved, caring for children.

After Jimmie and Barbara retired they took every opportunity they had to travel. They loved their adventures with one another as well as with their dear family. From the time their children were little they enjoyed camping, canoeing and fishing. Barbara especially always had an appreciation of nature and enjoyed being outdoors. In 2005, Barbara and Jimmie were able to experience the beauty of Alaska. It was a once in a lifetime trip with memories to go on for many years to come.

Barbara lived a full life. She was energetic, driven, and confidently took on challenges. If she really wanted to do something, she did it! She has encouraged her children and grandchildren to live the same way. Barbara was upbeat, easy going, yet incredibly goal oriented. She understood the power of always having something to look forward to! Because of her mindset, she was able to brighten many lives over the years. She will be missed for so many reasons, but those close to her will greatly miss her cooking and cake making. She poured a lot of love into those acts and it was obvious! Barbara was truly an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She truly possessed so many gifts and talents; and those around her were thankful that she shared them so freely!

Those left to carry on Barbara’s legacy of love are her husband, Jimmie Headley; children, Kevin (Karen) Headley, Stephanie (Paul) Charapata, Kelli (Michael) Stercula; bonus son, Ronnie Rose; grandchildren, Christina, Wesley, Corbin (Elizabeth), James (Becca), Maxwell, Jacob (Ashley),Jeffrey, Mitchell, Abigail; great grandchildren, Aadyn, Carson, Macey, Chelsea, Alexandera, and Carson.

Barbara was welcomed into Heaven by her parents, Arthur & Paula Hawkins; and her siblings, Carabell, Sonny, Emery, Lavon, Peggy, William and Sharon.

The Headley family would like to thank the staff at The Waters of Tipton, as well as Holly and Karla (nurses with Paradigm Hospice). The exceptional care and compassion you provided throughout this journey will be forever remembered.
