Penny Kaye Russell, age 77, of Tipton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. Penny was born on May 1, 1947, in Tipton, Indiana. On March 9, 1990, Penny married the love of her life, Butch Russell. The two shared 19 years of marriage before he passed away on June 26, 2009.
Penny graduated from Tipton High School, class of 1965. She dedicated her life to working for local law enforcement. She was a probation officer for eight years before becoming a dispatcher for Hamilton and Tipton counties, serving for 30 years in that important role.
Penny was a member of the Ash Street Church. In her free time, she enjoyed reading books, sewing, and crocheting. Her favorite pastime was going to yard sales, she could never pass one up!
Penny never met a stranger, everyone she knew, she loved like family. She loved to celebrate the holidays, Halloween and Christmas were among her favorites. Purple was her favorite color and if you lived in Tipton, you probably knew which house was Penny’s because it was bright purple! Penny was an amazing cook. She was well known for her southern style cooking. Her family’s favorites include burritos, taco salad, and beef vegetable soup. On occasion, she liked to sneak in venison and not tell anyone until they were done eating.
Penny’s greatest joy in life was her family. She loved each and every one deeply. A huge hole is left in her absence, but she left a legacy of love that they will all carry with them.
Penny left this world the day she entered it, 77 years later. It is said: “Dying on your birthday means you have achieved the mission you were born to achieve, and that’s someone worth celebrating.”
Those left to carry on Penny’s legacy of love are her children Rebecca (Anthony) Sund, Jim (Christina) Jacobs, Burnetta (Bart) Townsend, Judy Rittenhouse; grandchildren, Ashlee, Josh, Addie, Kaylee (Dakota), Daniel, Lillian, Rhegan, Ethan, Rebecca Kaye, Anthony, Sean; eight great grandchildren; adopted grandchildren Brittney, Chasity; and siblings, Larry Griffin and Virginia Ogden.
Penny was welcomed into Heaven by her parents, husband Walter “Butch” Russell; grandson, Terry Ray; as well as many aunts and uncles.
A funeral service celebrating Penny’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Noon at Taylor & Cowan Funeral Home located at 314 N. Main Street in Tipton. Visitation will take place Monday, May 6 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM and prior to the service on Tuesday from 11:00 am – Noon.
