Phyllis L. (Neighbors) Cain

Phyllis Lorraine Cain, 88, of Roanoke, Virginia, peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 29, 2026 in Kokomo, Indiana.

Born on August 7, 1937, in Roanoke, Virginia, Phyllis was the cherished daughter of Ira and Beulah Neighbors. A proud graduate of the Class of 1955, she built a life defined not by earthly possessions, but by steadfast faith, quiet strength, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.

Above all else, Phyllis loved the Lord. Her faith was the foundation upon which she built her life and the compass that guided every step she took. A devoted member of Seneca Baptist Church in Elliston, Virginia, she faithfully served as an elder and found great joy in worship, fellowship, and sharing Christ's love with those around her. Through life's greatest joys and deepest sorrows, she never wavered, trusting that God would faithfully carry her through every season. Her life was a beautiful testimony of grace, perseverance, and unconditional love.

Phyllis was a determined and hardworking woman who never shied away from life's challenges. Even when the deck seemed stacked against her, she always found a way to rise, strengthened by the faith she carried in her heart. She worked for many years managing a convenience store before later working as a supervisor at a cleaning service, approaching every task with dedication, integrity, and pride.

God's creation brought Phyllis endless joy. She had an incredible gift for gardening and landscape design, often spending hours creating beautiful flower beds and helping others improve their own gardens. Alongside her mother, she delighted in making "just a few little adjustments" to gardens they encountered, believing every space had the potential to bloom a little brighter. She also loved feeding the birds, especially watching for the brilliant red cardinals that visited her yard. She was an avid sports fan, loved Cardinals, had a well-known sweet tooth that few desserts could satisfy, and treasured quiet moments spent rocking in her favorite rocking chair, often rocking with such enthusiasm that she'd slowly make her way across the room.

Beyond all of her accomplishments, Phyllis' greatest calling was being a mother. She loved her children deeply and cared for them with a selfless heart, always placing their needs before her own. Life was not always easy, but she met every hardship with remarkable resilience, leaning on her faith and refusing to let adversity define her. Time and again, she showed her family what it meant to persevere with grace, courage, and unwavering trust in God. Her quiet strength became one of life's greatest lessons for those who loved her, a legacy of resilience, compassion, and steadfast faith that will continue to guide generations to come.

To know Phyllis was to experience genuine kindness. She possessed a wonderfully wry sense of humor that could catch you off guard and leave you smiling. Though she had very little of her own at times, she never hesitated to give to someone whose need was greater than hers. She lived selflessly, loved generously, and demonstrated Christ's compassion through countless quiet acts of service that often went unnoticed. Her greatest desire was simply to love God and love people well, and she did both with remarkable faithfulness.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Tom Cain (friend, Gloria) and Curtis (Kathleen) Cain; grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Pappenfuse, Retired Major Chris (Melissa) Cain, Justin (Chelsea) Ligoncain, and Ben Cain (Gabby Zoccola); great-grandchildren, Ainsley, Everlee, and James; her brother, Ira (Anne) Neighbors; niece, Jacinda Andre and her children; nephew, Bo Neighbors and family; along with many dear friends and her beloved church family, all of whom were richly blessed by her life.

Waiting to welcome her home in Heaven were her parents, Ira and Beulah Neighbors; her brothers, Marvin Neighbors, Bud Neighbors, and Kenny Neighbors; her daughters, Patsy Ford and infant Sandra Cain; and her grandson, Brendon Ford.

Though her family grieves her absence, they rejoice knowing that the faith she lived by has now become her eternal reality. She has heard the words she longed for: "Well done, good and faithful servant." Her life leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, sacrificial love, hard work, and quiet generosity that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
