He worked for Penn Central, then consolidated Rail Corp., working in Cincinnati in the cherished field. He later accepted positions in the real estate departments in Chicago and Indianapolis and retired from the industrial development group as project manager.

Due to relocations, they relocated from Fort Thomas, Kentucky to Tinley Park, Illinois then Noblesville, Indiana and finally settled down in Tipton, Indiana. After leaving the railroad industry, he worked at Tipton County Memorial Hospital/IU health, and then the Kroger company.

Dave enjoyed working outside in the yard and gardening. He and Barb especially enjoyed going to watch whatever their grandkids were participating in.  He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed researching ancestry.  In his free time he could often be found bird watching, golfing, or fishing.

His family legacy includes three children, Jennifer Yates of Peru, Laura Pope (Chris Myers) of Noblesville, and Jonathan (Amber) Yates of Tipton; sister, Judy (Ed) Teegarden of California, Kentucky, and brother, Paul (Debra Jean) Yates of Highland Center, Indiana; 10 grandchildren, Devin Piel, Griffin Yates, Darian Myers, Brant Pope, Katherine Yates, Avery Myers, Logan Gatliff, Roland Yates, Madalyn Gatliff, and Emmett Yates; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.
