Wuanitta Gay Phifer, age 79, of Arcadia, went home to her Lord & Savior on Sunday, July 2, 2023, surrounded by her loving family and friends.  She was born on March 3, 1944, in Elwood, Indiana to her parents, James & Irene Garst.  Wuanitta married the love of her life, Wayne Phifer on January 30, 1961.  They shared nearly 60 years of marriage and a lifetime of memories before he passed away on September 18, 2020.

Wuanitta graduated from Indiana Business College where she earned a business certificate.  She was a member of East Union Christian Church.

Wuanitta was one of the most kind, nurturing, and giving people you would ever meet. She spent her life loving God and sharing that love with family and friends. Family was important to her. She beamed with excitement when it came time for family reunions and family gatherings. She dedicated her life to raising children, grandchildren, and caring for family. She had a genuine loving heart and will be greatly missed.

Wuanitta had a passion for music, she sang in the church choir, and she participated in church worship leadership. She always had a song in her heart. Even in her final days, the music would calm her soul “Precious Lord take my hand, lead me on let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn…” If we needed to liven her up a bit, we could always count on Elvis to get her moving with “Jail House Rock”, or “Blue Suede Shoes”.

Those left to carry on Wuanitta’s legacy of love are her children, Lynetta Cole (Pete Sharkey), Lynda Plumlee (Marc Deckard); grandchildren, Christopher (Shelby) DeWeese, Daniel (Laine) DeWeese, Natasha Plumlee, William Sharkey, Samuel Plumlee; Great Grandchildren, Camden DeWeese, Corbin DeWeese, Kolt DeWeese; siblings, Keith (Betty) Garst, Margaret (Glenn) White, Alberta (Eugene) Whisler, Gerald (Jan) Garst, Dennis Garst.

Wuanitta was welcomed into Heaven by her parents, James & Irene Garst; husband, Wayne Phifer; son, Larry Phifer; brother Charles Garst, and sister-in-law Susan Garst.

A funeral service celebrating Wuanitta’s life will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023, at 1:00 pm at East Union Christian Church located at 1711 E 296th Street, Atlanta, Indiana 46031 with Pastor Rex Dunning officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service from 11:00am – 1:00pm.  Burial will take place immediately following the service in East Union Cemetery.
