The Talk of a Lifetime

Meaningful memorialization of a loved one’s passing can transform, heal, and comfort us. It highlights our loved ones’ sacrifices, reminds us of the things that they value, and inspires us with their life stories.

Have the Talk of a Lifetime, a program created by The Funeral and Memorial Information Council, was designed to help families have meaningful conversations about the things that matter most in their lives. These discussions can give important insights to the people they left behind — insights that can be used to honor and remember the lives of their loved ones.

Why is having “The Talk of a Lifetime” important?

Even though we often have daily conversations with our loved ones, the most meaningful and deep discussions don’t always happen. Having this kind of conversation can make a lasting difference:

It can help us see our loved ones in a new, more positive light

It can teach us valuable life lessons

It can give us a clearer understanding of the things they cherish and love

It can bring us closer together

It can help us reaffirm our love and appreciation for them

Taking the time for this conversation is a gift, for both you and your loved ones.

Who should have “The Talk of a Lifetime”?

We can have this meaningful conversation with anyone we value, cherish, and love — grandparents, parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins, a spouse, children, or close friends.

It doesn’t need to happen only when we feel that someone is nearing the end of their life. None of us knows what the future holds, so it’s important to seize the opportunities we have now to share our thoughts, memories, and love while we still can.

How do we start “The Talk of a Lifetime”?

We don’t need to wait for a special occasion to begin these meaningful conversations. They can happen anytime and anywhere, whenever you and your loved ones feel comfortable — at home during meals, on a walk, gathered with family, or while playing games.

Sometimes it helps to use visual prompts to spark conversation: a photo or photo album, a memento, or a cherished souvenir. Sharing memories at a memorable place, such as a church, a favorite restaurant, or an old park, can also open the door to meaningful stories and reflections.

May we always treasure every moment of our lives and take the time to have heartfelt conversations with those we love.
